Abstract
This thesis explores the potential of offshore wind energy in Italy, driven by the imperative to mitigate climate change and enhance energy security. Through a systematic analysis and modelling approach, the study assesses wind data from various sources, including ERA5 and CERRA datasets, to identify high-potential areas for offshore wind farm development and analyze correlations between Mediterranean zones. Utilizing Monte Carlo simulation techniques, the study simulates future energy scenarios, considering factors such as build probability, wind patterns, turbine characteristics, and array efficiency. The findings underscore the importance of strategic site selection, and investment in offshore infrastructure prioritizing high-potential areas. Future studies could explore the impact of climate change on offshore wind resources, integrate advanced machine learning techniques for resource assessments, and investigate offshore wind integration into Italy’s grid infrastructure. In conclusion, this study offers insights into offshore wind energy potential in Italy and outlines pathways for sustainable energy infrastructure development to realize a sustainable energy future.
