Abstract

This dissertation investigates how translation choices shape gender representation in contemporary French young adult literature, focusing on the Italian translation of Claire Renaud’s C’est quand la vraie vie ? (2023). The study approaches translation as a site of negotiation between linguistic structures, cultural norms, and inclusive aspirations, examining the challenges of rendering feminist discourse and non-normative gender representations from French into Italian. After outlining key theoretical frameworks in feminist linguistics and Translation Studies, the dissertation analyses the difficulties arising from grammatical asymmetries between the two languages, particularly with regard to gender marking, the generic masculine, and politically invested terminology. The analysis shows how translators must balance linguistic accuracy, narrative fluidity, accessibility for young readers, and the effort to avoid reproducing androcentric bias. Particular attention is paid to cases in which inclusive solutions conflict with established usage or risk compromising readability. The study also discusses the limits of translatability for certain culturally embedded terms and collective identities, highlighting the need to accept inevitable losses or adopt compensatory strategies. The dissertation concludes by reflecting on translation as a form of cultural mediation that, while constrained by linguistic and editorial factors, participates in shaping the imaginaries available to young readers, acknowledging both the potential and the constraints of inclusive intervention in literary translation.
