Abstract
The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the relationship between translation and journalism, two practices that are often considered to be distinct but which, upon closer inspection, represent in fact two important mediation tools. Translation and journalism have numerous, albeit often invisible, points of contact, in particular with regard to the processes of news production and circulation. My reflection on the contribution given by translation practices to the journalism industry began with an internship focused on the translation of news articles from English into Italian at Voxeurop, a European and multilingual online newspaper. The dissertation is divided into a first part consisting of a literature review, which outlines the role of translation in the birth of journalism and in the daily work of newsrooms, as well as how this role is rapidly changing due to recent technological developments. Special attention is then paid to the peculiarities of journalistic translation and to the work of the major news providers worldwide, namely news agencies. The second part focuses on the analysis of a selection of articles translated for Voxeurop and presents an in-depth study of headlines, as well as some considerations about the difficulties encountered during the translation process and the strategies adopted to overcome them.
