Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to offer a subtitled adaptation of seven episodes of the British comedy web series ‘Charity Shop Sue’. In the style of a mockumentary, the series follows the antics of manager Sue Tuke and her volunteers at the charity shop Sec*hand Chances based in Bulwell, Nottingham. The subtitling proposal focuses on the adaptation into Italian of comical elements such as culture-specific references, puns, taboo language and British slang. However, the main comic device of the series is the presence of diatopic variation in the form of Nottinghamese or Notts, a regional variety spoken in the East Midlands. The spatial, temporal, and linguistic limitations of subtitling, as well as the grammatical norms of the Italian language, represented a challenge to the adaptation of the complex syntactical, phonetical and lexical traits of said variety. Despite the above-mentioned limitations, part of the expressiveness of the language was attained through the balanced use of more creative strategies in conjunction with the typical rules of subtitling.
