Abstract
Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a cleaner alternative by reducing tailpipe emissions and enabling the integration of renewable energy sources into the mobility sector.
However, the rapid growth of EV adoption has brought new challenges, particularly in the sourcing and sustainability of materials used in electric drivetrains.
Among such solutions, the Emerging Externally Excited Synchronous Machines (EESMs), which exploit a current-based flux generation in the rotating field windings, allow for the elimination of rare earth materials while still achieving high efficiency and performance.
In this thesis, a design example of a rotary transformer is presented, a contactless solution that enables power transfer to the rotor winds of an EESM without physical contact, therefore enhancing reliability and reducing maintenance.
