Abstract

The thesis aims to contribute to the design of unaccompanied foreign minors’ reception facilities by establishing a model for residential care communities. The model follows the “meta-design” layout, which defines functional areas, submodules, spatial units, and their spatial relationship through requisites, guidelines, and recommendations. The thesis applies the model to De Carlo’s summer camp in Riccione and offers insights into the model’s application in the context of existing built heritage. As a case of building repurposing, this project contributes to the architectural reflection around the challenges brought by climate change. This work might be the first step of a broader research process leading to an acknowledgment of UFMs reception as an urgent design area of intervention and a field of architectural experimentation. This process offers architecture an opportunity to take on contemporary challenges and renovate its sense of responsibility and civic engagement.
