Abstract
This is the result of the experience gained within the “Language Toolkit” project, an initiative promoted by the Department of Interpretation and Translation at the University of Bologna, in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Romagna. The project aims to create a bridge between the academic and the professional world, providing companies with linguistic tools for international expansion and offering undergraduate students a concrete training opportunity. This thesis is the result of a 300-hour advanced internship carried out at Olitalia S.r.l., a leading company in the production and distribution of edible oils and dressings. The translation involved two specifications, translated from Italian into British English. The dissertation is structured into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the Language Toolkit project and presents the client company. The second chapter examines the internationalization and digitalization process of SMEs, with a particular focus on the economic landscape of Emilia-Romagna and the strategic role of translation in multilingual corporate communication. The third chapter deals with specialized translation, analyzing its distinctive features, stylistic and terminological conventions, and its impact on the industrial and technical sector. The fourth chapter focuses on tools supporting translation, with an emphasis on CAT tools and an in-depth look at Language Weaver, the adaptive machine translation system used in the translation process. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the pre-translation phase, offering an analysis of the commissioned text based on Nord’s functionalist model and describing the resources employed to ensure terminological and stylistic consistency in the translation. Finally, the sixth chapter presents the translation commentary, illustrating the translation strategies adopted and the linguistic choices made to address specific textual and terminological problems.
