Abstract

This thesis explores the potential implementation of the Data Mesh paradigm within the ADEO Group. As organisations increasingly seek to adapt to the challenges posed by the evolving digital landscape, flexible and decentralised data management approaches may become a valid alternative to traditional centralised and monolithic architectures. The document illustrates the four core principles of Data Mesh, i.e. domain-oriented ownership, treating data as a product, self-serve data infrastructure, and federated computational governance. In addition, it highlights their main benefits, including empowering teams with control over their data, improving data quality, fostering cross-domain collaboration, enabling scalable infrastructure, and ensuring consistent governance across the organisation. Leroy Merlin Italy, part of the ADEO Group, is transitioning to a modern, cloud-based data platform. This thesis provides an overview of the architecture, technological stack, and methodologies currently used within Leroy Merlin Italy, and how I applied them during my internship as a Data Engineer in this Business Unit. Furthermore, the document addresses some practical complexities associated with the implementation of the Data Mesh paradigm as well as the cultural shift necessary to support this transformation. Finally, this work contributes to the ongoing discourse on contemporary data architectures, providing possible suggestions for complex and large-scale organisations contemplating a move towards decentralised data management, ultimately aiming to maximise the value derived from their data assets.
