Abstract
This dissertation aims at discussing translatology, a relatively recent discipline that studies any type of translation, and two matters that have been analysed within its scope: the relationship between the ability to translate and the capability of speaking two languages, and child language brokering.
In particular, Section 2 will explain translatology by describing its features, the development of its definition, and clarifying its importance. Section 3 will give the answers that three eminent scholars, namely Brian Harris, Gideon Toury, and Bogusława Whyatt, gave to the question “Is every person who speaks at least two languages able to translate?”. Section 4 will illustrate child language brokering, the translation done by children, and investigate the translation strategies adopted by youth, their feelings, and the way in which their activities are perceived in the contexts of school and healthcare.
