Abstract

Adopting the competition for shaping the public spaces around the Forum in Rome, titled "The New Archaeological Walk – Interventions in the Area of the Imperial Forum", as starting position, the thesis accept the challenge to develop a project proposal by Legislative Decree 36/2023. The project proposes the implementation of solutions aimed at facilitating the access, the fruition and the enhancement of the Imperial Forum remains within a comprehensive logic system that expands the environmental quality of the open spaces coupling it with its huge historical value. The intricate archeological terrain of the Imperial Forums has changed significantly over the course of millennia, mirroring the development of Rome itself. Through the integration of creative interventions that strike a balance between preservation, accessibility, and cultural engagement, the New Archaeological Walk program aims to "profoundly change the significance of these locations, transforming them into a collection of public spaces and balconies overlooking the archaeological area". The study acknowledges the Imperial Forums' great significance as a cultural heritage monument and begins an extensive investigation into its historical significance. It then makes its way through the complex issues that arise from trying to preserve these locations in the face of constant urbanization pressures and an increase in tourists. Through a careful analysis of the body of existing research, case studies, and best practices in heritage management, the thesis determines the best route along the way dei Fori Imperiali.
