Abstract
This research investigates the role of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in Italy's energy transition, emphasizing its potential in meeting climate commitments and integrating with national energy strategies. Beginning with an overview of Italy's current energy landscape and targets, the article explores the challenges and opportunities in the country's energy shift. It delves into the fundamentals of CCUS technologies, their types, mechanisms, and global status, highlighting their significance in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The review features a case study on the Ravenna CCS Hub, showcasing its technological innovations and role in the national energy strategy. Additionally, it discusses recent advancements and future trends in CCUS technology. The paper examines Italy's and the EU's regulatory frameworks for CCUS, economic viability, investment scenarios, and stakeholder engagement. It also addresses the social and environmental aspects of CCUS, including public perception and environmental impact management. Concluding with reflections on future directions, the review underscores the importance of CCUS in Italy's sustainable energy transition, supported by a comprehensive list of references for further exploration.
