Machine translation: history and impact on the translation industry

The purpose of this thesis is to introduce machine translation and CAT tools systems and draw some conclusions as to how they have impacted translation and the translator profession. In the first chapter, I explore the history of machine translation. In the second chapter, I talk about the world of CAT tools as well as give a brief overview of the history of the most well-known CAT tools. Lastly, the conclusive chapter of this thesis focuses on mistakes commonly made by machine translation and how these have created the need for pre- and post-editors. Lastly, I make a final comparison between MT and human translation.
