Abstract
The term Irish humour is commonly used in both media and day-to-day life in Ireland, but understanding its specific qualities can require foundational knowledge on its origins and development over time. Using the popular television show Derry Girls as a focal point, this paper will explore the concept of dark humour in all of its forms by defining relevant terminology, discussing its consistently controversial response, and acknowledging the benefits of its usage in comparison to lighter forms of comedy. General Irish history will be utilised to understand the role of dark humour in the country; however, the historical context of Northern Ireland specifically and the sectarian conflict that occurred there, the Troubles, will compliment particular examples of Irish humour in media and show how acute communal trauma contributes to its usage. Other writers or playwrights whose work focuses on Ireland, including Paul Muldoon and Martin McDonagh, will have their work analysed to compare critical and audience responses to Lisa McGee, Derry Girls’ creator and primary writer. Amongst these comparisons, issues of authenticity and intention will be discussed, as they are common topics in debate regarding dark cultural humour. Ultimately, the different aspects of the paper will converge to show how one of the primary purposes of Irish humour is to act as a coping mechanism for those afflicted by direct or intergenerational trauma, as well as a means of resisting the crippling emotional impact of oppression and violence.
