The Oil Industry of Mexico - The case of Tabasco development

Around 1920, just a century ago, Mexico was the second largest oil producer in the world, behind only the United States; in 2023 it’s a net energy importer and its state-owned oil company Pemex is the most indebted oil company in the world. Mexican society is characterized by extremes of wealth and poverty, but in spite of the challenges it faces, Mexico is one of the chief economic and political forces in Latin America being at the same time from 1994 a member of OECD. After a brief overview of today’s world energy sector, this analysis will explore Mexico’s role in the global energy market and how the country might rely on its oil industry as a tool to strengthen economic development. A particular focus will be on the key state of Tabasco and how Italian energy company Eni is coupling its activities with project that benefit local communities’ development. Finally, some new compensation initiatives devised by engineering company DG Impianti together with research firm NE Nomisma Energia will be examined.
