Abstract
The aim of this dissertation is to provide background information on structured documents in the legal context, as well as to design and develop an editor module for a web-based application that assists users in creating and updating legislative and judicial documents, replacing an already outdated editor called LIME. Simplex, the new version of the application, is built using a new component-based architecture that makes it easier to make modifications to the software than the previous monolithic architecture. Although the editor is not restricted to a specific XML dialect, it was designed to function primarily with the Akoma-ntoso standard. Most of the previous functionalities have been reimplemented as they were. The new version puts emphasis on the representation of the document on the page as well as making sure that every change made to the document leaves it in a valid state. The internal and the external documentation along with the unit tests and well defined architecture make sure that the software stays true to its open source nature.
