This thesis discusses the practice of inverse translation towards English used as a lingua franca (ELF) in the academic context. In particular, this dissertation focuses on the translation from Italian into English of chapter 3 of the volume Marco Zoppo, ingegno sottile, carried out by the candidate as an intern at Bologna University Press. The first chapter takes into analysis the use of ELF and gives an insight into academic research on the topic. After providing a picture of the characteristics of ELF, it takes into consideration the adoption of such language in academia and its consequences on the translation process both as source and target language. This chapter also analyses the main features of English Academic Discourse (EAD) and translation into English as a second language. The second chapter provides the reader with an idea of the work environment by briefly presenting the publishing house, the volume to be translated and the style guide adopted by the interns. In the first section, the third chapter discusses the instruments at the translator’s disposal for the translation of a specialized text and hypothesises the use of writing assistants for self-revision. The second one provides an analysis of the peculiarities of the specialized language of art history found in the source text and states how the translator decided to render it. In the fourth and last chapter, the author discusses three issues tackled in translation: the rendition of the syntactical complexity of the Italian text, how tentative language has been dealt with, and the expressions of the language of art history that cannot strictly be considered as terminology. Lastly, chapter 4 categorises the main changes made during the revision, comparing them with the suggestions provided by Grammarly and ProWritingAid. In conclusion, the author argues that, after being revised, the results of professional translation into a second language can be acceptable enough for academic publishing.
