Abstract
This dissertation is the result of the participation of the present author in the Language Toolkit programme: a collaboration project between the Chamber of Commerce of Romagna and the Department of Interpretation and Translation of Forlì. The aim of this collaboration is to foster the internationalization of SMEs as well as introduce graduating students into a professional context.
For this project, the present author was paired up with Brighi Tecnologie Italia, a Forlì-based company manufacturing textile automation machinery. The aim of this dissertation is to provide the translation from Italian into Chinese of part of the company catalogue, and from English into Chinese of a proforma invoice.
The dissertation is composed of five chapters, each of them describing a different stage of the translation process. The first chapter briefly introduces the Language Toolkit programme and the company the present author collaborated with, and describes the main objectives of the translation project. The second chapter offers some insights on translation directionality and analyses the different viewpoints existing on inverse translation, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of this practice. The third chapter contains a detailed analysis of the source texts according to Christiane Nord’s Looping model (1991). The fourth chapter describes the methods implemented for the creation of linguistic resources such as corpora and termbases. Lastly, the fifth chapter outlines the translation strategies that were adopted, providing some practical examples taken from the source texts, as well as illustrate the revision process following the translation stage.
