Translating the art catalogue for the "do ut do" project

This thesis aims to discuss the translation of an art catalogue for the “do ut do” project. The catalogue was produced for the fourth edition of the “do ut do” biennial (2018 – 2020), a cultural fundraising project based on the theme of “La morale dei singoli.” The task entailed the translation of an introductory text and a series of catalogue entries dedicated to each artist and artwork donated to that edition. The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter presents an overview of the “do ut do” project and its objectives. The second chapter concerns the art catalogue as a textual genre, and how its functions and features apply to the communicative aims of the project. The third chapter covers translation as a mediation process, focusing on the extratextual aspects of the process. The fourth chapter concerns the analysis of the source text, consisting of both extratextual and intratextual factors. The fifth chapter is dedicated to the presentation of the target text resulting from the process. Finally, the sixth chapter involves a comment on the translation in which the translation is examined in detail, with the use of examples to illustrate the problems encountered and choices made to arrive at a translation suitable for its aims.
