Abstract
The current work analyses interpreting in football press conferences as a form of institutional communication that presents unique features. The objectives are, on the one hand, to identify the characteristics of football press conferences and the ways in which this domain differs from others; and, on the other hand, to shed lights on the role of interpreters and on the specific traits that characterize working in this context. The first chapter focuses on the features that make press conference an institutional matter, starting with a general definition of the field and a more detailed one for the sports context, and ending with taking into consideration the football ambit, which represents the domain of the dissertation. The second chapter presents the corpus named CSCL 18/19, which contains 12 press conferences of the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League group stage. The corpus is analysed to extract the main characteristics of football press conferences. The third chapter analyses interpreting in the conferences of the corpus, carried out as consecutive interpreting, and the work of the interpreters. Lastly, the fourth chapter confronts the consecutive interpreting of the corpus with a press conference of the same event that was carried out with a simultaneous modality. The objective of this chapter is to highlight the differences in the two types of interpreting, presenting the advantages, the disadvantages, and the habitual usage of the two in the context of UEFA tournaments.
