Abstract

Software is exponentially growing in modern automatic machines. Consequently, the operations of writing, debugging and maintenance are increasing the time necessary to be accomplished. In order to shorten this time, there is the need to define methodologies for software which enhance modularity, along with re-usability and standard-ization. This work stems from the need, on the part of Heila Cranes Spa, to have an updated and reusable software solution. To achieve a modular architecture for the software template, easily readable and compatible for different machines, the OMAC Pack-ML standard has been adopted. It is a standard aimed at promoting efficiency, flexibility, and management of production operations in industrial automation systems. To develop the software solution in a methodical and organized manner, without un-necessary time losses due to errors in work setup, the software development process indicated by the “V-model” was followed. This model involves a thorough analysis of the system's functionalities, structure, and resources. Its two main phases, development and testing, proceed in parallel, allowing for a quicker identification of errors and resulting in significant time savings during implementation. To efficiently develop the proposed software solution, a preliminary phase of study of the system was necessary. Initially, the crane was examined from a purely mechanical perspective. Subsequently, it was essential to analyze what is referred to in the course of the work as "Equipment Modules", which are the systems with which the crane is equipped. After examining the system from a physical standpoint, a thorough analysis of its behavior and all possible operational modes, such as overload management, was conducted. Following this, it was crucial to carefully study the adopted standard, OMAC PackML, to avoid misconceptions of con-cepts or deviation from the goal of achieving a solution that is easily understandable, standardized, and modular.
