Abstract
The activities carried out in this project were aimed to improve the approach to maintenance for the CNC machine tools of the Machining & Maintenance section at CERN Main workshop.
The project started from an analysis of the past corrective maintenance interventions performed on the group of CNC machine tools on which the new maintenance plan will be applied.
According to the data retrieved from the first study and the requirements and boundaries of the project, the final choice has been to implement a preventive maintenance plan with a fixed schedule to the CNC machine tools.
The new maintenance plan is based on the machines manufacturers manuals that have then been tuned to meet the needs and the time schedule of the Machining & Maintenance section.
A full control of the geometry of each machine has been added to the normal maintenance procedure and it has been scheduled once a year.
The maintenance activities have been divided between machine operators, internal maintenance unit and external services, according to technical and safety knowledge needed for each activity.
The preventive maintenance plan has been organized and will be managed with a software already in use at CERN, this software is called Infor EAM and it allows to plan the maintenance interventions, assign them to the right unit or directly to the right person and also to keep track of the activities carried out, and generate official reports of the interventions.
At the end, a first calculation for the estimation of maintenance workload and costs has been proposed, but the quality and quantity of data need to be improved to have more reliable result in the future.
