Proposta di sottotitolaggio di The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco e confronto con l'adattamento di un sito di fansubbing

The aim of this dissertation is to make a comparison between a professional subtitling into Italian and an amateur subtitling into Spanish of the U.S. comedy show The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco. The analysis focuses on the main translating issues found in the source text such as cultural references, taboo humor and puns, and the strategies used to solve these problems. The first chapter offers a general insight of Audiovisual Translation (AVT), mainly focusing on the subtitling practice. The final part of the chapter presents fansubbing, a rising phenomenon that consists of the non-professional translation of subtitles made by the fans of a TV series. The second chapter deals with the translation of humor, starting from an in-depth analysis of taboo elements, and includes some of the issued caused by them as well as the most common strategies used to solve them. Then, the same will be carried out concerning humor. The third chapter starts with an insight of stand-up comedy as a genre in the U.S. and a brief history of the roast from an overview of its origins, evolution and main aspects. Then, the chapter provides a description of the The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco. The fourth and last chapter provides the actual comparison between the two translations, pointing out the most interesting difficulties encountered in the translating process through a series of examples, which will show and analyze the different strategies followed by the two translators and their effectiveness.
