Abstract

This study presents the performance-based seismic design and evaluation of a 28-story reinforced concrete residential building employing a dual lateral force-resisting system consisting of Special Moment Resisting Frames (SMRFs) and reinforced concrete shear walls. The structural model was developed using CSI ETABS V22.1.0, and the design and assessment procedures were carried out in accordance with ASCE 7-16, ACI 318-19, and ASCE 41-17 provisions. The study included preliminary member design under gravity loads, followed by linear seismic analyses using the Equivalent Lateral Force and Design Response Spectrum procedures. P-Delta effects were considered, and the response spectrum analysis was calibrated to meet ASCE 7-16 minimum base-shear requirements. The final design included seismic, gravity, and wind load combinations, strength and serviceability checks, reinforcement detailing, and nonlinear time-history analyses using eleven pairs of spectrally matched ground motions at the MCER level. The linear design satisfied strength and serviceability requirements, although response spectrum analysis generally underestimated story drifts and shears compared with nonlinear analysis. Damage was mainly concentrated in lower-story core and corner shear walls and decreased toward the upper stories due to frame–wall interaction. Variations in lateral stiffness generated axial forces in the beams, with compression in connecting beams and tension in adjacent ones. Their distribution correlated with larger lateral deformations and may help identify suitable locations for outriggers, bracing systems, or other stiffness-modifying components. Overall, the study demonstrates the effectiveness of combining conventional linear design procedures with nonlinear performance-based evaluation to achieve a more realistic understanding of the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete high-rise dual structural systems.
