Abstract

This dissertation examines the sources of Red Bull Racing's sustained competitive advantage, employing the Resource-Based View (RBV) and the VRIN framework (Barney, 1991) as the primary analytical lens. The analysis aims to explain the mechanisms through which that advantage was generated and defended, tracing the team's trajectory from a symbolic one-dollar acquisition in 2004 to an enterprise valued more than four billion dollars two decades later. The analysis proceeds across four dimensions: the historical process of resource accumulation from 1989 to 2004; the corporate strategy of vertical integration and the construction of a multi-entity organisational architecture; the cost and revenue structure of the team; and a longitudinal financial statement analysis of Red Bull Racing Limited's statutory accounts. The financial analysis reveals that net profitability at the statutory entity level bears no meaningful relationship to championship performance. This championship-profitability paradox is shown to be neither accidental nor indicative of commercial failure, but rather the deliberate outcome of a corporate architecture configured to maximise reinvestment in the capability base rather than to extract profit at the entity level. These findings advance a theoretical refinement to the RBV, where the framework conventionally assumes that VRIN resources manifest as superior, observable profitability (Barney, 1991; Peteraf, 1993). In this case, sustained competitive advantage manifests as enterprise-value appreciation and competitive compounding rather than reported profit, such that statutory-entity profitability is neither necessary nor sufficient to indicate its presence. The dissertation concludes that Red Bull Racing's advantage resides not in any single resource but in the systemic complementarity of a deliberately constructed resource ecosystem, creating its most durable and least imitable source of advantage.
