Abstract

In this study the communities of two species of macrophytes, Cymodocea nodosa and Caulerpa prolifera were subjected to a treatment of nutrient enrichment for three months with the aim to reproduce the conditions of marine eutrophication. After the incubation period were evaluated the effects of this in situ eutrophication on community metabolism (NCP, R, GPP), DOC release rates, biomass of the whole plant, leaves, rhizomes, roots and the associated fauna, biodiversity of the faunal assemblages. Results of community metabolism analysis indicate an increase of NCP of 20% in Cymodocea nodosa and a decrease of 180% in Caulerpa prolifera, meaning that only the seagrass maintains its carbon sink capacity that is totally lost in the seaweed. DOC release analysis confirm that macrophyte meadows act as net DOC sources and this tendency was stronger after the nutrient enrichment. The effects of the treatment on the biomass of plants and organisms were the doubling of the biomass of Cymodocea nodosa (especially roots) and 50% decrease in the biomass of Caulerpa prolifera, especially roots and rhizomes. The biomass of the faunal community followed the increase and decrease of the biomass of the macrophytes. The treatment resulted, also, in the doubling of species richness in Cymodocea nodosa while it had almost no effect on Caulerpa prolifera and the modification of species composition on both communities. The results obtained from this study, even if different from what expected in certain cases, confirm the strong effects of eutrophication on the communities of Cymodocea nodosa and Caulerpa prolifera and their associated fauna.
