Abstract

This thesis focuses on the validation of a new mechanical system for introducing panels into the Stream Edge Pro, a one-sided edgebanding machine. The research was conducted at Biesse Group, with the aim of improving the Mean Time To Failures (MTTF) and reducing maintenance interventions through accelerated life tests in demanding environments. These tests involved measuring physical quantities such as response times using sensors connected to a National Instruments DAQ system, programmed in LabVIEW. The tests were conducted in a harsh environment, specifically characterized by high levels of wood dust, to evaluate the system's durability and performance. The Stream Edge Pro machine enhances the edges of wood-based panels like chipboard and MDF by applying plastic tape to ensure proper aesthetic and dimensional tolerances. These semi-finished panels are primarily used in the furniture industry for products such as kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, and tables. The machine's squaring module (MDS) plays a critical role in aligning panels before edge banding, ensuring the quality and durability of the final product. The main focus of this thesis is the evaluation of the new panel introduction system, specifically its mechanical components, known as “Paws”. By conducting accelerated endurance tests in an environment prone to contamination and wear, the system’s performance is analysed to improve reliability and minimize maintenance intervals, providing clients with a more efficient and robust solution.
