Abstract

This thesis explores the impact of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems on corporate performance, emphasizing their crucial role in digital transformation efforts. The study provides a comprehensive overview of ERP systems, including their development and the current state of major platforms like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, and Baan. The research identifies the organizational and technological challenges associated with ERP implementation. These challenges involve managing business processes, overseeing projects, integrating technology, and handling associated risks and costs. The evaluation encompasses both pre- implementation assessments—such as functional fit analysis, risk evaluation, and cost-benefit analysis—and post-implementation reviews, including case study in- sights. ERP systems offer substantial advantages by streamlining operations, improving data accuracy, and facilitating better decision-making. However, they also present significant risks, including the complexity of implementation, potential cost overruns, and organizational resistance. A practical perspective is added through insights gained from an internship at KPMG Advisory, with a focus on SAP ERP software. This experience provides a real-world context for understanding the strategic and operational benefits of ERP systems and the practical challenges encountered during their deployment. In conclusion, while ERP systems have the potential to transform corporate performance positively, their implementation is complex and fraught with challenges. Successful deployment requires careful planning, a deep understanding of organizational needs, and ongoing adaptation to technological changes. This thesis contributes valuable insights into the implica- tions of ERP systems for corporate performance and presents effective practices for their successful implementation.
