Abstract

The following work is a comprehensive description of the activities conducted during an internship at IMA Group, a renowned leader in the design and manufacture of automatic machines. IMA Group is the developer of Croma, a pharmaceutical tablet coating machine based on an innovative, continuous manufacturing approach. This paradigm requires constant and accurate monitoring to ensure compliance of the final product with stringent quality standards. In this context, the objective of this work was the enhancement and optimization of Iride, a real-time system that can be integrated with Croma to assess the quality of the coating applied to a continuous flow of pharmaceutical tablets, leveraging a camera and computer vision techniques. The introduced modifications and novel features will be presented in-depth, including both hardware upgrades and newly implemented procedures aimed at enhancing the quality of images captured by the camera. Additionally, the integration of advanced artificial intelligence techniques has significantly improved the vision system's tablet filtering capabilities, crucial for ensuring the reliability of results by analyzing only suitable tablets. Rigorous experimentation was conducted to validate the efficacy of these enhancements, confirming their success in improving overall performance and effectiveness of the system.
