Infanzia e sordità: la sottotitolazione audiovisiva come ausilio nella decodifica delle immagini.

This thesis is the result of an internship focused on subtitles for the deaf public I carried out with Concorto Film Festival during the summer of 2023. In particular, I decided to analyze the process which leads to the creation of subtitles for deaf children since it is common, when this is the audience, that the purpose of audiovisual products be a twofold one: to entertain while educating. Therefore, in order to enable readers to fully grasp the complexity of the subject, I have undertaken to begin with an initial comprehensive overview of the historic and scientific background to deafness, followed by an appreciation of what subtitling entails, particularly when the end users come from a vast and heterogeneous community such as is the deaf one (chapter 1). My research continues with an in-depth examination of the concept of accessibility in the light of two emerging themes, namely audism and abilism, which help frame the discourse and pave the way for an understanding of the methodology approach I have employed (chapter 2). Finally, I scrutinize the seven short films I subtitled for Concorto Kids, highlighting and explaining in detail the choices I made, with the aim of demonstrating the depth and breadth of study necessary for a quality subtitling work aimed at deaf children (chapter 3).
