Abstract

Hydrogen is gaining prominence as a clean energy carrier, and offshore platforms offer a unique opportunity for sustainable hydrogen production. This study investigates hydrogen generation through Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) and Alkaline Electrolyzer (AEL) technologies on an offshore platform and using gas compression and liquefaction techniques for storage it which employs process simulation by Aspen HYSYS. The analysis begins with a simulation of the process which is consist of three steps of desalination, electrolysis and storage by assessing operational parameters, energy consumption, and performance. The economic feasibility of the hydrogen generation system is assessed through capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) estimation by estimation of all purchased equipments and installation cost by employing Aspen Process Economic Analyzer (APEA). The study also explores inherent safety aspects, identifying potential hazards and proposing mitigation measures to ensure safe offshore operations. By integrating simulation, economic analysis, and safety considerations, this research provides insights into the viability and safety of offshore hydrogen production, contributing to the growing interest in clean energy solutions for offshore applications.
