Tra teoria e pratica: traduzione e sottotitolaggio di Starring Jerry as Himself al Lucca Film Festival

In the global context of the digital revolution and globalization, translation and adaptation of audiovisual products become essential to ensure universal access to content from different parts of the world. Subtitling emerges as the predominant translation mode, integrating into daily life through cinema, television, Internet, and film festivals. This study analyses the internship activity carried out at the Lucca Film Festival, focusing on the translation of a Chinese-English docufilm, Starring Jerry as Himself. The use of pivot subtitles during the translation of the Chinese scenes, due to the lack of language skills, is a key component of the investigation. The thesis explores the transition from the theoretical to the practical level in the subtitling process, with the goal of creating high-quality subtitles for an Italian audience. The analysis is divided into four chapters, beginning with a theoretical framework on audiovisual translation, followed by a historical and technical examination of subtitling. The third chapter focuses on the context of film festivals, and in particular on the Lucca Film Festival and its translation policies. Finally, the fourth chapter examines the adaptation process in detail through concrete examples extracted from the subtitles produced, highlighting the different translation strategies employed and their impact on the final rendering of the adapted text.
