Abstract

This work wants to introduce the general reader to what is Lean Construction, and what it means including Lean thinking in a company. The starting focus of this thesis’s work is to explain what are we referring to, when using the term “LEAN”. In the past 30 years, have been published many scientific articles and books about Lean Construction (LC): this work starts with a focus on the evolution of the theory of LC through the eyes of some of the most famous and pragmatic personalities that wrote about it, such as Professor Lauri Koskela in collaboration with Patricia Tzortzopoulos, and Mike Kagioglou; Professor Glen Ballard, Womack & Jones, Liker, and so on. introduction of the TAKT TIME TABLE thanks to the KHiB Project of the Bergen Academy of Art & Design: the reader will discover how is possible to make things happen. Then the Case Study: it will be described how LC has been interpreted by four of the most well-structured construction companies in Finland, (3 General Contractors, and an SME consultant company) which are a source of pride for the Nordic community. The data collection has been conducted with the help of Semi-structured interviews, Visual Collaboration, and Qualitative Analysis. This part of the work produced a conference paper at the “2023 European Conference on Computing in Construction”: Implementation of Lean Construction in Finland, Coccolini, Bragadin, and Kahkonen, 2023; it is a collaborative project between the Alma Mater Studiorum of Bologna and the Tampere University of Technology born from a six month period of internship and Master thesis in Finland. before Conclusion, the reader will find an overview of the newest BIM-Based software, which integrates the idea of the Continuous Improvement mentality, typical of LC, that aims to implement the main aspects of a building process: Communication, Quality Production, Pushing Flow, Safety Management, Risks Management, Efficiency Evaluation, increasing of Profit, and Client Satisfaction.
