Abstract

In order to develop a novel, low-cost space propulsion system with a thrust of 0.1N, this paper discusses the feasibility of a propulsion system based on N2O and a MEMS engine. A possible solution for a self-pressurized C2H6-N2O MEMS engine is presented, including structural design, fluid dynamics, thermal and stress analysis, and manufacturing design. The experimental setup and possible improvements for future developments are also presented. Current results show that this propulsion system has lower operating power than an electric propulsion system, higher specific impulse than cold gas or monopropellant engines, and an unparalleled thrust-to-mass ratio to all current low-thrust systems.
