Abstract

Given the increasingly urgent need for a climate change adaptation, a new green roof prototype is developed, bearing in mind sustainability key pillars. The prototype is meant to be an hight-tech, low-cost technology, designed with an eye on the future. First, goals and aims as well as how the prototype is linked to environmental, social and economic sustainability policies are introduced. Moreover, the most significant “WH questions” are answered. Second, the chassis design is revealed from the very general idea to the most remarkable particulars. After explaining the reason behind shapes and geometries choice, all components are enlisted. Thereafter, the water tank assessment is performed and applied loads computed according to NTC2018. Concurrently, a suitable materials choice, based on physical properties, chemical resistance and intended tasks to be performed, is introduced. Accordingly, the prototype 3D design and related FEM simulations are carried out in order to validate its mechanical behaviour and resistance, making sure it would fulfil all safety requirements once operative. Third, laboratory tests are conducted to characterise the prototype thermal behaviour and related procedure explained. Lab test setting and tools are specified, while smart strategies adopted to properly carry out the test are clarified. The outcome singles a value out which is then fundamental to estimate the corresponding thermal insulator layer thickness according to the minimum value imposed by national regulation. Therefore, a comparison of the prototype with traditional strategies is provided. Envisioning the future, further developments and applications are proposed in order to pave the way to a better and more sustainable future. Likewise, a personal vision on future buildings is presented, stressing the key roles played by future constructions on environmental and human impact, hence by designers.
