Abstract

For many uses in industrial archaeology and real estate management, accurate three-dimensional (3D) data from indoor spaces is very important. In this project, Villa Maraffa, whose recovery project is also followed by the association Operai dell’Arte APS, serves as a case study for the survey of industrial archaeology using state-of-the-art technology and sensor. This villa was built in the 18th century, but there is not enough information about the exact date because it was considered a rural part of the city. The 3D camera Matterport Pro 2 was used as one of the sensors for data acquisition in the study. This method was chosen because it is offered as an effective, quick, and inexpensive approach to build point clouds, however with less precision than Laser Scanner Leica RTC360 which is another sensor as a source. We start by discussing the problem of how a point cloud's quality should be completely assessed. The outcomes of the Matterport indoor mapping are then shown, and the accuracy analysis of the Matterport point cloud, including the full point cloud and single point cloud quality evaluations, along with some potential issues with the point clouds, such as incompleteness and misregistration, is carried out by comparing the coordinates of targets identified by the Leica RTC 360 Laser Scanner. Finally, the obtained results are fully described and examined based on the finding of the optimal solution to enable a quick, accurate, and well-timed survey for a complete digital reconstruction of the object.
