Abstract

Nowadays, the main objective of industrial automation is to have an high productivity. This lets usually think that the companies focus is only on motors speed and components performances, but it is not always like that. For certain applications, in fact, it is not necessary that the motors follow trajectories with flawless precision, or that position and velocity references are updated every millisecond. It is the case, for instance, of unwinders and rewinders, which have always to compute movements with controlled velocity without abrupt variations, with mild acceleration and deceleration ramps. This is the context of the thesis work: the creation of a serial communication interface in order to initialize and handle ebm-papst BLDC motors. The idea is to explore all the potential of those motors, investigating their functionalities with and without serial communication interface. Subsequently, it follows the exploration of the terminal necessary to actuate a serial communication with the motors in a PLC environment. Then, the implementation of some commands with an high level programming language and into an optimized environment, in order to test the motors and terminal functioning. To conclude, the generation of a structure developed using proprietary programming language that permits not only to initialize and parametrize the motors, but also to manage the simultaneous functioning of more motors in the same communication network. Finally, some considerations will be made on advantages and disadvantages for this kind of application, as the entity of delays in the transmission and the reduction of the encumbrance thanks to the presence of a reduced number of terminals and cables, since they are substituted by telegrams.
