Abstract
This final dissertation was written under the auspices of the Language Toolkit project, born out of the collaboration between the Department of Interpretation and Translation of Forlì and the Chamber of Commerce of Forlì-Cesena. The project aims at creating a bridge between the university world and the professional world. In particular, this dissertation stems from collaboration with the municipality of Predappio, which commissioned the translation of its town travel guide from Italian into English, and the revision of a part of the same guide that had previously been translated and required an update.
The present work is composed of four chapters. The first chapter briefly places the dissertation in context, introducing the Language Toolkit project together with the institution that commissioned the translation and the translation task itself. Moreover, it focuses briefly on the importance of translation in the tourist sector. The second chapter comprises an analysis of the concepts of specialized languages and specialized translation; it furthermore presents the debate on whether to consider the language of tourism a specialized language. The third chapter analyzes the language of tourism and its textual production in general, and that of travel guides in particular; it then explores the concept of "tourist" and the importance of having specific expertise when it comes to translating for the tourist sector. Finally, the fourth and final chapter focuses on the actual translation work carried out. The first part consists in an in-depth analysis of the source text from a textual, lexical, and syntactical perspective. The second part illustrates the main difficulties encountered by the present author during the translation and revision process, the strategies adopted to overcome them, and provides examples.
