Abstract

Ringing represents the main cause of signal distortion and communication errors in CAN FD networks, and it is generated by the repeated reflections owing to the inherent impedance mismatch in the physical bus of a CAN. Consequently, automotive manufacturers can exploit the potential of the CAN FD protocol only if ringing is suppressed. In this thesis is demonstrated that by inserting technologically innovative plug & play modules, called RACANs, it is possible to knock down ringing on the vehicle CAN network, allowing the use of the CAN FD protocol on existing CAN architectures with a very high level of in-vehicle communication reliability and without having to make any topological changes. The RACAN technology is described in detail, and the excellent results obtained in bench tests and in in-vehicle test are shown. This innovative product will allow car makers to be ready for the market demand of the next five years, without having to redesign and invest in the development of a new architecture.
