Abstract

Abstract Until recently, modeling of urban air quality has been based on extensive operational models. There is a rapid increase in the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to address the same issues. Chapter one explains the importance of using the green infrastructure and show the types of the infrastructures, it also explains in detail the study case. Chapter two address the pollutant types along with the sources, the effect of vegetation on air quality is one of the most important topics in the current time. Definition of dispersion and deposition are explained as well. This thesis studies the application of CFD approach to common problems. In particular, pollutant dispersion from line source placed within regular building geometries and studied with the CFD code. The standard k−ε turbulence model is used for the CFD simulations. Chapter three explain in detail the preprocessing in STAR CCM+ as a CFD approach. The aim of the simulation is to observe the thermal effect in a street canyon to the dispersion mechanism of carbon monoxide. Street canyon is a term used to describe a quite narrow street with tall, continuous buildings on both sides of the road. Aspect ratio of 1.65 and various temperature gradients are investigated. Chapter four illustrate the simulation for two scenarios. The two scenarios are taken under consideration, the first scenario considers the thermal effect in the street canyon on the dispersion of the Carbon monoxide, while the second scenario applies the green infrastructure on the internal walls of the street canyon. Chapter five illustrate the results from the two scenarios, values of carbon monoxide are compared to check the effect of the vegetation on the dispersion of the pollutants.
