Abstract

This dissertation falls within the context of website localization and presents the localization of certain sections of the New Zealand tourist website Wilsons Abel Tasman. Chapter 1 introduces the theme of web communication. This subject is related to the discourse regarding the website, its architecture, its basic principles of usability, readability and accessibility, and its most important features for search engine optimization. Chapter 2 deals with the language of tourism, focusing on the strategies adopted in the tourism industry in terms of linguistic elements. On the basis of the study of Dann (1996) on the language of tourism, two main perspectives emerge: the perspective of authenticity and the perspective of strangerhood, whose linguistic counterparts are identified through a corpus-based analysis of two monolingual corpora of online travel brochures. Chapter 3 focuses on localization, with particular attention to the cultural adaptations that are involved in every single localization process. The analysis focuses on web localization, highlighting the steps involved in a project, the decision path and the actors that take part in a localization assignment. Chapter 4 analyses the website according to four principles: (1) the level of usability and (2) the level of readability of the entire structure, (3) the strategies used for search engine optimization, and (4) the promotional strategies that make the individual web pages charming and attractive to the readers. Subsequently, it focuses on the source texts that are analyzed through the functionalist model developed by Christiane Nord. Finally, Chapter 5 provides an overview of the tools used and created for the translational stage, as well as an analysis of the target texts following the functionalist model presented in the previous Chapter. It also presents the most prominent challenges encountered during translation and the strategies adopted to overcome these challenges.
