Abstract
This Thesis aims to provide a literature review on Energy-Efficient Train Control (EETC) and Energy-Efficient Timetabling (EETT). Solving EETC and EETT problems, although highly complex, is crucial in order to implement decision support systems for reducing energy consumption and environmental impact in railway networks.
Relevant mathematical models and algorithms applicable for the problems at study are presented along with their pros and cons. Moreover, the Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, on which many models and solution approaches are based upon, is briefly introduced.
The first chapter offers an overview of both EETC and EETT, the second focuses on single-train Energy Efficient Train Control, the third provides our conclusions. The recent survey by Scheepmaker et al. (2017) inspired our presentation of topics.
