Abstract
Gamebooks represent a strange phenomenon in the literary world. Many people believe them to be a long-dead genre which could not survive the extremely rapid evolution of roleplaying games, and thus fell victim to the advent of computers and videogames.
Translating a gamebook not only means to walk in its writer’s shoes, but also forces the translator to face a completely different type of roleplaying experience, given that adventure gamebooks had a very restricted fanbase during their brief history. A successful translation of this type of literature requires a remarkable deal of attention, precision and passion. The aim of this study is to present a possible translation of the science-fiction gamebook “Doctor Who: Choose your Adventure: Night of the Kraken”.
In the first chapter we will be analysing the history, varieties and peculiar features of this complex interactive books, while also analysing the noteworthy educational potential still held by this type of literature to this very day.
The second chapter will focus on the theme of the gamebook: this section will contain a detailed history of the Doctor Who franchise from its humble beginnings to its modern glory and widespread popularity. This chapter will also briefly discuss its educational purpose.
The third and final chapter will contain the proposed translation of part of said gamebook and will focus on the analysis of said translation, describing the main difficulties encountered during the translation process and how they have been solved.
